Beginning in the 1960s, Gelman Sciences, Inc. contaminated the environment on its site with 1,4-dioxane, a component of its manufacturing process. The Gelman site is located in Scio Township and is a candidate for designation as a United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) National Priorities List Site, commonly called a USEPA Superfund Site.

Residents who wish to have their residential drinking-water wells tested at their own expense are encouraged to contact one of these companies.
